The holiday season is here, but so is inflation. For some, this is the most wonderful time of year. But if you’re like 89% of consumers polled by Numerator, you’re bracing for the impact inflation will have on your spending and gifting. With soaring costs, worrying about how you’ll pay for presents or whether you’ll be able to afford a nice Christmas dinner can take the fun out of the holidays. My husband and I have basically skipped Christmas for the last few years because we couldn’t afford it. Since we don’t have kids, it’s pretty easy for us to opt out of celebrating. We don’t exchange gifts, we don’t entertain, and we don’t travel to see family. So what can you do if you’re like me and can’t afford Christmas? If you’re struggling, there are a few things you can do to help ease the stress without ruining the holiday. 1. PrioritizeHaving a small or non-existent budget probably means you can’t afford to travel, buy gifts for everyone, and say yes to every get-together this Christmas season. But that doesn’t mean you have to opt-out of the celebrations entirely. Keep it simple. Who is most important to you? What traditions are you not willing to give up? Once you determine that, spend your money accordingly. “We are transitioning back into the meaning of Christmas, focusing on providing instead of receiving, and challenging the kids to brainstorm ways we can serve our community,” says Nicole Graber of Gracefully Abundant. 2. BudgetOverspending at Christmas is extremely easy and common. Whether you have a lot of money to spend or only a little, you need a budget. Figure out how much you can afford to spend on holiday shopping without getting into debt or financial trouble. Consider all potential holiday-related expenses, such as gifts, cards, gift wrap, shipping, decorations, food and drinks, entertainment, travel, donations, family photos, etc. Then taking your priorities into account, start assigning the amount you can spend on each category, person, or activity. Make sure your total doesn’t exceed what your budget allows. If it does, take another look at what’s important to you, and try again until you can make it work. Stick to this budget! Check where your budget stands before making any purchase, and update it afterward so that it stays up-to-date. If you’re concerned about overspending during the holidays, take out what you can afford to spend in cash or use a pre-paid credit card for that set amount. Once it runs out, you’re done. No more spending! Related Article: 50+ Self Care Gift Ideas For Under $50 3. Start EarlyIt’s not uncommon these days to walk into a store and see Christmas items on the shelves next to Back to School and Halloween items. There’s even a term for this, called the “Christmas Creep.” As soon as you see those aisles of green and red, you start thinking about Christmas, whether you want to or not. Of course, companies start promoting the holidays early to get you to spend more. Especially on “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday.” And it works. 38% of consumers surveyed in the 2022 Deloitte holiday study say they will be shopping earlier this year. It doesn’t have to be a bad thing, though. You have a better chance of finding the perfect gift at an affordable price if you have time to look. Keep an eye on deals and promotions on the items on your Christmas list. Are there any great sales you can take advantage of? Sign up for newsletters from your favorite stores to take advantage of the discounts they offer to new subscribers. (And then maybe unsubscribe in the new year to avoid any future impulse buys?) You can also browse the store’s clearance sections and stock up if they have what you need. Another bonus is that it’s easier to manage your spending by spreading it out over a few weeks or months. Starting early also gives you more time to make extra money if that’s what you need to do. Related: 300+ Side Hustle and Small Business Ideas You Can Start Today! 4. Skip the GiftsIt’s okay to have a giftless Christmas and not feel guilty about it. After all, the holidays should be about togetherness, not material things. Sending handwritten cards to friends, family, and other important people is an affordable way to show that you care and are thinking of them. If money is tight, you can do this for free online. Do fun, free things with your loved ones, like going to winter carnivals and parades or meeting Santa Claus. Host a pot-luck dinner or a Christmas movie marathon. Drive around looking at the lights with your loved ones. Go sledding. Volunteer together at a soup kitchen or food bank. “Many museums and cultural institutions have special holiday programming or, at the very least, have festive decor,” suggests Monica Fish of Planner at Heart. “The best part? You can check out admission passes just like books from your library for a no-cost.” If gifts are essential to your celebration, hold a Secret Santa or gift exchange with a set dollar limit. It will reduce stress and keep your spending within your budget. “Due to increased inflation, we have decided to modify our family gift-buying tradition,” says John Dealbreuin of Financial Freedom Countdown. “We will only be buying gifts for children instead of buying gifts for everyone.” 5. Get CreativeGift-giving doesn’t have to include spending (a lot of) money. Remember, it’s the thought that counts. If you’re crafty, handy, or artistic, why not put your skills to use and make handmade gifts? Bake cookies, upcycle those mason jars, knit a scarf, build a wooden bench, or put together a gift basket. Pinterest is a gold mine for do-it-yourself ideas! Or if you’re more like me and lack those DIY skills (or you simply don’t have the time), why not offer to do something for your loved ones instead? The good old coupon book of “one free massage” and “one breakfast in bed” is a tried and true gift idea for your significant other. But that same concept can work for other people in your life. Instead of buying gifts, you could always offer to babysit for a loved one on a Friday night or give your child a pass to stay up an hour later. There are still some costs associated with any DIY gift, but they are often a more affordable option. And people will appreciate the personal touch. 6. Celebrate LateIf you’re struggling to afford Christmas, celebrating late will allow you to stretch your budget further. Retailers want to sell their leftover inventory (especially Christmas items) and offer significant discounts in the days right after Christmas. Take advantage of these sales or stock up on anything non-perishable to use next year, like gift wrap and cards. Boxing Day (December 26) has become a “shopping holiday” for those of us living in the UK, Canada, and Australia. Similar to Black Friday, retailers offer significant discounts on Boxing Day that are often extended into Boxing Week. The holidays are also busy—90% of those surveyed by Deloitte plan to travel in November and December. Postponing your trip until January makes it easier to get together and avoid crowds. You can also take advantage of cheaper flights and accommodations. According to Hopper’s 2022 Holiday Travel Outlook, airfares between Thanksgiving and Christmas will be the highest in the last five years. They suggest traveling on less popular dates (such as after the holidays) to save as much as $300 on domestic flights. 7. Be HonestThe best piece of advice I can give to someone who can’t afford Christmas is simply to be honest about it. You don’t have to share the details of your finances, but don’t put yourself into debt because you’re being polite or too shy to speak up. Your loved ones should be understanding and respectful of your situation. Deloitte found that more than a third (37%) of respondents say their finances are worse than last year. Many people are not working right now. There’s a good chance that money is tight for your loved ones too. You’re doing them a favor by offering to celebrate differently. No matter what you do, remember that Christmas is about more than just gifts and money. It’s about spending time with the people you love, creating memories, and feeling grateful for what you have. In short, if you can’t afford Christmas, you absolutely can still enjoy the holidays without getting into debt. Have a plan. Set a budget. Be creative. And focus on the non-material side of Christmas. YOUR TURN: Do you have any advice on how to save more or spend less during the holidays? Please leave a comment and let us know! With more than 180,000 titles, Audible is the largest and fastest-growing online audiobook supplier. However, few people realize it’s also a great tool for earning money! If you’re wondering how to make money on Audible, here are a few different ways to generate income as an author, content creator, or affiliate marketer. What Is AudibleAudible is Amazon’s platform for audiobooks. You can download thousands of titles and listen to them on phones, laptops, tablets, and more. You’ll need an Amazon account, but it doesn’t have to be Prime; a regular account will do. An app is available for mobile users. As for payment, you can make one-time, full-price purchases of your desired audiobooks or sign up for one of Audible’s renewable subscription services. There are several options to choose from, including monthly and annual memberships, and a subscription will give you access to members-only discounts and other perks. You can also make money through Audible. If you’ve ever wondered how to get paid to read audiobooks, this is your chance to find out! Four Ways To Earn Money on AudibleYou may be a freelancer looking for extra cash or a writer interested in branching out to audiobooks while planning your next novel. It’s a venture worth considering for authors, affiliate marketers, and entrepreneurs. Create an AudiobookCreating an audiobook is the most straightforward way to earn money on Audible. Amazon even has its own self-publishing platform called the Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX), which will walk you through the process step by step. The first thing to decide is whether you want to narrate your manuscript or have a professional do it. Here are four factors to consider before recording an audiobook:
Once you’ve recorded your audiobook, the next step will be uploading it. Fortunately, ACX makes it easy: It’ll take you through the process screen by screen, letting you choose distribution deals, upload cover art, and advertise using your chosen keywords. Remember that you’ll still need to publish your book’s print or digital edition before creating an audiobook version. ACX’s automated process will ask you to “claim” a title, which must already exist in Amazon’s database. Another thing to take note of is Audible’s distribution deals. You’ll be prompted to pick exclusive or non-exclusive distribution for your audiobook, which will impact your earnings. Here are the differences between the two:
There’s no charge for using ACX as a service. However, you’ll need to pay narrator fees if you go the professional route, and Audible will claim a percentage of your royalties. Additionally, you can’t set the price of your audiobook: Audible generates it automatically with an algorithm based on runtime. Longer books cost more. Be an Audiobook NarratorTo make money through Audible, you don’t have to be a fiction or non-fiction author. Instead, you can narrate works from authors. You’ll start by creating a “narrator profile” on the Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX), Audible’s audiobook self-publishing platform. It’s free, and your profile functions as your resume for authors looking to hire. You can outline your work history, upload samples, and demos, and submit audition audio files for various projects. As for how to make money on Audible, there are three ways that you can get paid as a professional narrator:
You can expect to make anywhere from $50 – $250 PFH, depending on your skills and experience. You’re allowed to set your price, but you’ll need to stay competitive while also figuring out what generates a profit for you. The more experience you have, the higher rates you can set. In their Royalty Share and Royalty Share Plus programs, Audible offers a 20%-40% cut of the royalties; this figure is split equally between the author and the narrator. The percentage depends on whether the author has chosen exclusive or non-exclusive distribution rights through Amazon and its affiliates. Giving them exclusive rights means more royalties. Over time, you can email Audible and ask to be vetted as an Audible Approved Producer, which will distinguish you from the amateurs and give you greater visibility among authors looking to hire. Ultimately, if you’re wondering how to get paid to narrate audiobooks, ACX can be a great place to start. It’s open to everyone, including those without prior experience, and it’ll let you learn and refine your skills as you make money. You can also decide whether you’re more interested in fixed upfront fees or potentially bigger royalty payments. Become an Audible Affiliate MarketerYou might be asking yourself, “how does Audible make money?” In addition to selling distribution deals and taking a chunk out of royalties, they also utilize affiliate marketing. Businesses use affiliate marketing for product or service awareness. An affiliate is a person or website that promotes them, and in exchange, the company offers a commission for every click, sale, or sign-up they receive. Audible’s affiliate program works through referrals. In other words, you refer new people to Audible with a unique promotional link, and if they sign up, you get a commission. It’s called the Audible Creator Program, and it offers $15 per referral along with a free ebook for each new customer. To get started with the Audible Affiliate Program, you’ll need to sign up, generate promotional links, and share them with others. Here are just a few ideas for spreading the word:
Affiliate marketing is just one way to make money from your writing. It can be lucrative if you reach a broad audience and generate many commissions. Even if it doesn’t make you rich, it can bolster your book sales and supplement your royalties with another potentially steadier source of income. Sell Audible Products/ServicesConsider a more promotional role if you’re wondering how to make money from Amazon Audible without being a narrator. You can sell Audible products and services and earn a commission through their Amazon Associates Program. The Amazon Associates Program allows you to earn money for every sale generated or every trial completed through your special promotional links. It’s a bit like their affiliate program, but there are several ways that you can earn, and they each have their payouts. For example, someone signing up for a free 30-day trial will net you $5. If a website visitor signs up for a paid, premium Audible membership plan, you get $10. Another way to make money is through a la carte (ALC) sales. These are small, independent sales where someone purchases a book from Audible without having an Audible membership. They’re only worth $0.50 each, but they can add up over time. The Amazon Associates Program can be an excellent choice for people who want to make money through Audible without actually being Audible content creators themselves. You don’t have to write any ebooks or narrate any audiobooks. You just spread the word about Audible through whatever networks, forums, or fanbases you already have, reaping the benefits of a commission-based service powered by your social circles. Making Money on AudibleThat’s right Audible fans – it’s possible to generate a passive income stream on the very same platform where you spend it. You’ll have several options as both a creator and a non-creator. Remember: no previous experience is required. If you’ve been wondering how to make money on Audible, you can sign up today and start bringing in cash as an author, narrator, affiliate marketer, and more. More Side Hustle Articles:

Coffee photo created by freepik – www.freepik.com Via https://mylifeiguess.com/self-care-gift-ideas/ A few years ago, I was leaving the grocery store when the cashier told me to take off the poppy that was still pinned to my coat. She said that Remembrance Day was over and that it was offensive to leave it on. I was taken aback by her comment and asked, “So, we’re only supposed to remember the veterans for two weeks a year?” I couldn’t tell if she was trying to brush off the comment to avoid any further discussion or if she simply had no clue what she was talking about, but she replied, “It’s just the way it is.” The woman in line behind me then chimed in with a simple “Leave it on” and smiled as I grabbed my bags and left. War is a touchy subject; naturally, I have my own opinions. I was not, however, trying to make a political statement or purposely be disrespectful by leaving my poppy on. I honestly had just forgotten it was still there. Leaving a poppy on after Remembrance Day is good, isn’t it? Why Do We Wear Poppies?Remembrance Day is a time for us to come together and remember all those who have fought for our country. It is a day to honor their sacrifice and recommit ourselves to working for peace. So why do we wear poppies on Remembrance Day? The poppy has become a symbol of Remembrance Day because it is a flower that grows in fields where battles have been fought. It is a reminder of the bloodshed and the loss of life that has occurred in war. When we wear a poppy, we show respect for the soldiers who have died in the war, the veterans who survived, and their families. We are also pledging to work for peace so that future generations will not have to experience the horrors of war. The poppy is a powerful symbol. By wearing one on Remembrance Day, we are helping to keep the memories of those who have died in war alive. Related: 7 Simple Ways to Be More Charitable Is It Offensive To Wear a Poppy After Remembrance Day?Some Say YesSome people agree with the cashier and feel that wearing a poppy after Remembrance Day is disrespectful. One 2008 article by CityNews states: “Most people don poppies about two weeks before Remembrance Day. But you shouldn’t be sporting them in the days afterwards, although many do, thinking it’s a sign of respect. The poppy is actually supposed to be left on the tomb at the place where the ceremony is held, a final sign of respect for the fallen soldiers who never came home. Or they can be worn for the remainder of the day. But once November 12th comes, the poppies should be gone.” Another 2015 article by the CBC also says that you should take your poppy off after November 11th. … But The Veterans Say No, It’s Not OffensiveAccording to a 2021 Metro article: “The official stance of the Royal British Legion is that you can wear a poppy any time during the year as it commemorates those who lost their lives in war.” As a Canadian, I wanted to see if we held the same view on the subject as the British do. And we do! According to the Royal Canadian Legion’s website: “[…] it is not inappropriate to wear a Poppy during other times to commemorate Fallen Veterans and it is an individual choice to do so.” “There is no set period when the poppy should be worn. In fact, a person may wear a Poppy at any time. Traditionally, however, the poppy is worn during the Remembrance period, which is from the last Friday in October to the end of the day on 11 November.” [updated Source 1 and Source 2] No matter your stand on war or poppy etiquette, telling someone it’s offensive to wear a poppy after Remembrance Day is incorrect. Wear Your Poppy As Long As You WantThere are a lot of issues raised around the subject of wearing a poppy:
The correct amount of time you are allowed to wear your poppy shouldn’t be one of them. Is it “offensive” to wear a pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness outside of October? Is it “offensive” for men to grow mustaches in any month other than November? Of course not! So why would it be offensive to wear a poppy after November 11th? As the Legion clearly states, “Wearing a Poppy is a personal expression of Remembrance, and how someone chooses to wear a Poppy is always an individual choice.” That said, the tradition is that the poppy is removed at the end of Remembrance Day and placed on the cenotaph or a wreath, stored or disposed of as a sign of respect. What do you think? Do you wear your poppy after Remembrance Day? Via https://mylifeiguess.com/its-offensive-to-wear-a-poppy-on-november-13th/ Self-storage is quite popular in today’s era and will continue to grow in the future. You may not know, but almost 40% of Americans use self-storage. People need it when they don’t have enough space to store their belongings or are undergoing transitions like moving. Whether you are a business owner, homeowner, renter, or military member, self-storage helps you declutter and keep organized. Finding a suitable unit can be easy if you plan to look for short- or long-term storage solutions. Sometimes people forget they even have a storage unit or don’t pay rent on time. When this happens, the facility has a problem: an unrentable space. A storage company will hold a storage auction if the company cannot contact the renter within the agreed upon timeframe. What Is a Storage Auction? You’re already acquainted with self-storage, but do you know what a storage auction is? A storage auction is held when someone abandons their unit or it goes into a lien, and the storage companies want to reclaim their financial losses by auctioning it off to the public. People love to go to storage auctions because they can find treasures. Even though the process can be costly and time-consuming, this is the best choice for storage companies to compensate for their financial losses. Of course, they will receive only some of the profits back, but it will prevent them from being in the red. There are many storage auctions held annually in the United States: approximately 80,000. Depending on where you live, you may find one nearby. Related: 34 Best Things To Sell To Make Money How Does it Work? When a storage company cannot contact the renter on an unpaid unit, they consider it abandoned or gone into a lien. The next phase is to schedule an auction, advertise it, and bring in the auctioneer. Finally, the storage company auctions off the units on the event day, and the highest bidder gets it. Storage auctions are extremely popular, thanks to reality TV shows like Storage Wars and Auction Hunters. Registration ProcessBefore attending the storage auction, participants will likely have to pre-register. You may sign up online at the facility before or on the day of the event, or contact the facility to learn more. When Can a Storage Unit Be Auctioned Off?Before the storage auction even happens, the storage facility gives the tenant a grace period of 30 to 90 days to pay any past dues. If the tenant pays the balance, the storage company will not auction off the storage unit. However, if they fail to do so, the storage facility has the right to auction off the unit. The Bidding ProcessBefore any bidding begins, the storage units will open for the participants to briefly look inside the unit. The unit will close after every participant has a chance to see inside the space. Due to the time limit, you may struggle to look through everything. Searching through the boxes before bidding is prohibited and considered trespassing. You really only get a peak. When this happens, take notes on the items you saw to decide what you will bid on later. You should also note that winning bids can vary from less than $100 to nearly $1000. Auction RulesIf this is your first auction at a storage facility, familiarize yourself with the rules before participating. Common rules include:
Who Can Participate in a Storage Auction? You can participate in the auction if you are 18 years old and can provide legal identification. Most of the time, your local auction may be swarming with bidding veterans. However, you may find unique individuals like online sellers, collectors, or treasure hunters because anyone can participate in the auction as long as they are of age. After the AuctionIf you become the winning bidder, it might take a long time for you to clean out all the possessions. You should have your own storage space, whether that’s your garage or paying for the storage unit itself. You might also need help, so asking a family or friend to help you can cut your time in half. If the renter passes away, the storage company will contact their loved ones to see if they want to pay the rent or clean it out. If the company gets no answer, the unit will go up for auction. Does the storage company keep the total profit from the auction? No, the companies usually keep around 50% of the winning bid since they have to pay advertisers and services of the auctioneer. What things do you usually find at a storage auction? That depends! You can find treasure or nothing but junk. In most cases, you can find valuable items like jewelry, art, collectibles, and even cars. Does the storage company remove any valuables before the auction? No, they do not since the auction is their last resort. How does an online auction work? Most auction websites want you to create an account so that you can participate. Then you can search the list to see which unit you wish to bid on. How often does storage auction occur? Depending on your area, there can be a few to multiple storage auctions almost every day of the week. For example, a storage auction near me may have two but there may be 6 where you live. On average, storage facilities sell between 3 to 6 storage units at a time. Do you need a special license or permit to attend the auction? You do not need any license or permits to attend the auctions. You only need your valid state identification. ConclusionIf there are storage auctions in your area, remember that every auction is a different experience. You may find valuable items or junk. If this is your first time attending a storage auction, bring a friend to experience it. You can win as the highest bidder! More articles from the Wealth of Geeks Network:
