Many people enter the “real world” with no idea how to make themselves productive or successful. They keep looking for answers to better themselves. Others feel like getting their life together is too cumbersome and isn’t worth a try. You will experience many challenges as an adult, both young and old. Maybe it involves the top things we value in life, such as money, self-improvement, having a meaningful career, and achieving all our personal goals. Life is never easy, though, and it keeps testing you. You will face problems that make you feel like you cannot take it anymore. People you trust will let you down for no reason. And you may not be able to fulfill your dreams. But you can learn how to get your life together despite tough times. Others have done it, and you can too. Getting Your Financial Life TogetherFor most people, your financial life will start in your teens or twenties. You’ll get your first job and first car, move out of your parent’s house, and maybe go to college. Soon enough, you’ll be looking to buy a house, start a family, or travel the world. (Or maybe all three!) All while paying back those student loans and living within your means. Here are some tips that successful people use to get their financial life on track. Have Clear Financial GoalsWhen you are starting out, you have no idea what exactly you are stepping into. It’s a good idea to set a financial goal that keeps you on track to where you want to be. The best way to achieve your financial goals is to have a plan. It allows you to manage your money purposefully and track your progress easily. Your goals can be broken down into other smaller steps, such as: Short Term Financial GoalsThese are goals you can realize within a short period, usually from 0-3 years. They should be manageable and easy to start with. Do not strain to make your short term goals too high to reach. You want something attainable. Mid Term Financial GoalsThese usually have a lifespan of about 3-7 years. They should be more complicated than short-term goals and help you reach a more sophisticated financial stage. Long Term Financial GoalsLong term goals are how prepared you want to be for your future. These are the goals you want to achieve in the next seven years and beyond. Organizing your goals this way will help ensure you complete them within the timeframe you have set. Establish an Emergency FundYou have to prepare for the unexpected and set some money aside. Some emergencies can be severe enough to ruin your finances if you don’t have emergency savings to turn to. There are different emergencies in life, such as:
You can start your emergency fund by saving a percentage from your monthly income or choose a round number like $100. The important thing is that the money in your emergency fund is out of bounds and only used in case of an emergency. Treat it like any other bill, or better yet, automate it so that you don’t even miss the money coming out of your spending account. Have A Budget or Spending PlanAfter establishing your financial goals, prepare a monthly budget or spending plan for yourself. Your plan dictates where your money goes and how you use it on various expenses. Having a plan helps you focus your money on the critical things and prevents overspending on things you may not need. Your budget will also help you pay all your bills on time and be prepared for irregular expenses. Bank On Your FutureYour future depends on your current banking habits. You need to start a savings account and retirement plan to protect your future from financial struggles. To make the best future financial plans, choose the right bank and financial products. Avoid banks with crazy interests and unnecessary fees that will take your hard-earned money. Your bank should also be easy to use and have financial advisors who understand your needs. Getting Your Professional Life TogetherAlthough we are more than just our jobs, our careers are a big part of our lives. They shape who we are and how we live. A great job gives us joy, a sense of accomplishment, and enough money and relaxation. A bad job, however, can consume everything and still leave us struggling to make ends meet. Don’t underestimate your career when getting your life together. You can improve your professional life by using these tips. Know Your Strengths and WeaknessesYou have to be honest about what you can and cannot do. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is an eye-opener. It will help you engage in activities you know you can accomplish and avoid projects that will only give you problems. To determine your talents, look at your completed projects and your work history. What jobs did you thrive in, and why? What tasks do people often look to you for help with? You can also try identifying your talents by taking career personality tests. Plan for a ChangeThe labor market is constantly changing. It’s easy to be left behind if you do not adapt to these changes. For example, in marketing, online marketing has taken over the industry, and those businesses that have not embraced technology are suffering huge losses. Change does not occur once. It happens gradually over time – and that’s a good thing. Doing the same thing over and over again for several years would be incredibly boring and unfulfilling. Learn from Successful PeopleA mentor is far more important than people think. These are people who have achieved success in your career field. They have faced challenges but kept on pushing to become what they are. You can learn almost everything through their struggles to become better. They will also give insight into ways to solve your challenges even before they reach you. Never Change Your Goals, Change the ApproachWhen you have failed to accomplish a goal you have made, what is your next action? Many life coaches advise that you not change your plan to something simpler just because you have failed to reach it on your first try. You made the goal for a reason, and you must find a way to achieve it successfully. Instead, try changing the approach and system you used. Getting Your Personal Life TogetherWe do most of our living outside of our work, yet often neglect our personal lives. Achieving your professional goals will help you succeed in life, but so will achieving personal goals and making ourselves a priority. Better Yourself Through Self CareIt is essential to learn to take care of yourself. Many people wait until they are sick to start, not realizing how detrimental that is. Taking care of yourself involves:
Get Enough SleepSleep is an inevitable activity that helps to relax your emotional and physical status. When you do not get enough sleep, you can have significant health issues that will affect your productivity and even cause health issues. Get into a routine of giving your body the rest it needs. Avoid specific foods and drinks before bed and aim for 8 hours of sleep every night. Exercise DailyExercise is a must to stay healthy. Whether you hit the gym, go for a morning jog, or join a sports team, exercising helps you to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. You can also effectively shed unwanted weight through daily exercises. Eat Healthy and RightOur body depends on the intake of the food we eat. If you do not eat enough healthy food, your body may not function well and you may not have the energy you need to make it through your day. Ensure you eat healthy foods that will not contribute to factors such as diabetes and obesity, and save those sugary treats for a special occasion. Take a BreakIt’s easy to work all the time, and there is a lot of pressure to do so. But your body needs a break to allow your brain cells to relax and muscles to get back to working effectively. Not only do you need breaks throughout your day, but you should be taking days off from work, too. Don’t let your vacation days go to waste! Even if you’re not able to take a trip somewhere, not going into work for a week or two will help you reset. Stop Complaining About Your Life and ActTalking about your problems is fine and generally considered to be healthy, however, complaining all the time is not. Life is challenging for everyone, but complaining about it does nothing except make us more miserable. Anytime you find yourself complaining about something, stop yourself and instead try to focus on what you can do about it to make the problem better. Live ProactivelyMany people are not successful because of procrastination. It’s too easy to mindlessly scroll through your phone or watch another episode rather than getting to your work. Always strive to finish what you have started. Once you get started on a task, it’s easy to keep going. So tell yourself you’ll do one specific thing or work for 5 minutes on something. It’s usually enough to trick yourself into keeping working. Be Very OrganizedOrganization is a key to achieving success. It helps you spell out your goals clearly and helps you plan for every step you need to make it happen. Always organize yourself by breaking projects into small units to accomplish them easily. Remove Every Toxic Person in Your LifeIt may hurt to let go of some people in your life, but remember to put yourself first in every situation. Not everyone wants you to succeed, and anyone who keeps you away from your success is an enemy of your progress. Cut them off. Get Your Life on Track with These Proven StrategiesIn conclusion, getting your life together can be a challenging but rewarding journey. You can secure your financial stability by setting clear financial goals, establishing an emergency fund, following a budget or spending plan, and banking on your future. Similarly, by knowing your strengths and weaknesses and planning for a change in your professional life, you can achieve career success. The key is to have a plan, be proactive, and take control of your life. Remember, others have done it before you, and you can too. With persistence and hard work, you can get your life together and achieve all your personal and professional goals. Related Articles:

Are you searching for helpful money-saving tips to get through these more challenging times? Then, we got you covered. After someone took to a popular online finance forum asking for these tricks, these are the top-voted recommendations. 1. Never Shop Impulsively“I have developed the habit of rarely shopping impulsively,” one confessed. “I usually think about buying something for weeks, months, or years before I buy it. Try to spend money on things that give you lots of use or enjoyment time back, not just a temporary euphoric boost.” 2. Drink as Much Water as PossibleAnother admitted, “I thank my parents for ensuring I never drank soda and sweets when I was a kid. I love some sodas, but I RARELY drink them now because I don’t crave them as an adult. Your body will thank you too. This also goes for alcohol, by the way. Save your money and your body!” 3. Stop Eating Out and Using Food Delivery Services“Stop eating out! This is the biggest one right here. Restaurant food is insanely overpriced, and it is never as good as when you make it yourself home,” one stated. “The tipping people have told me to stop eating out already. They said if you hate tipping, stop eating out or ordering delivery. I followed their advice and saved a ton of money. No more tipping for me.” 4. Get Yourself a Good Coffee Maker and Bean GrinderOne Redditor replied, “Spend some money to buy a good coffee grinder and coffee maker. Then, make and drink great coffee at home every day.” Another joked, “Who would’ve guessed making something at home is cheaper than buying something pre-made outside every day?!” 5. Keep a Few Emergency Pizzas“Stock up on decent frozen pizza that’s less than five dollars each when on sale,” one elaborated. “Bonus if you do my fave, the Ristorante thin crust, for $2.99 or $2.97. Always have at least one or two of these on hand to avoid countless instances of $25+ Dominos or other delivery. Sometimes humans need pizza, and it’s futile to fight this. Lean into it, smarter.” 6. Start a Monthly Budget“Take your monthly bank and credit card statements, and tally up how much you spend vs. how much you make,” another noted. “There are templates available online or in Microsoft office. Then, look at each category (i.e., eating out, cell phone, subscription services) and see what areas you can reduce your expenses. And think of ways you can increase your income so that it is always more than your expenses. Then invest your savings.” 7. Cut Back on Your Monthly SubscriptionsMany in the thread agreed, “Everything these days is a monthly payment or subscription. It’s the way businesses do it now, that continuous cash stream, which means a constant stream exiting your account. Identify all subscriptions and reoccurring fees. Then Trim back. Do you NEED Spotify? Twitch? YouTube Pro? Trim back cell service. Maybe fewer TV channels on cable or slower home internet.” 8. Shop Deals and Buy Store Brand“Shop deals, price match, and go to more than one grocery store,” someone explained. “One store has reasonable prices on most things, but another may have better sales on meat, for example. Buy store brand in most cases. The store brand is of decent quality, usually. For example, name-brand chips like Lays and Ruffles are now up to $5.65. On the other hand, no-name chips at no-frills are $1 EA and decent.” 9. Invest in a Deep Chest Freezer, Buy in Bulk“Get a freezer and buy meat on sale in bulk and freeze it. For example, if one store recently had a sale on a hamburger – $3.99 lb, which nowadays is a steal. I bought 12 packs of 2 lbs each. I do the same with chicken and roasts,” answered another. Popular Reading: 300+ New Side Hustle and Small Business Ideas 10. Find a Cheap HobbyOne Redditor volunteered, “Find a hobby you love that doesn’t require repeated costs. A hobby where you buy and reuse an item several times is golden. So buy a good pair of hiking boots, and hit the trails. Or get a used guitar, and spend a year learning how to play. So much advertising is designed to promise people they will be entertained or get a dopamine hit. If you develop a hobby, you’re not bored or looking for the next exciting thing.” We hope you enjoyed these Reddit recommendations for saving money. This article originally appeared on My Life, I Guess. Via https://mylifeiguess.com/cheap-at-home-date-night-ideas/ You’re very mistaken if you think you need a college degree from an ivy league university to make the big bucks. Plenty of jobs pay well and require no degree whatsoever. Many jobs require on-the-job training or certification rather than years of education (and student loan debt). They can provide financial stability and career advancement opportunities with dedication and hard work, just like any other career. This article will explore some of the highest-paying jobs without a college degree. What Is Considered a “High-paying” Job?If you’ve Googled “high-paying jobs without a degree,” you’ve likely seen lists with six-figure incomes and other lofty figures. But it’s important to note that these salaries are often the outliers, not the norm. That said, plenty of jobs are available that pay well above average wages for their industry. When I looked at this topic myself, I was surprised that most of the jobs cited as “high-paying” started as low as $30,000 per year for an annual salary. Additionally, most had an average salary of around $50,00 and a cap close to $75,000 annually. The Highest-paying Jobs Without a DegreeThis extensive list of jobs you can get without a bachelor’s degree is based on data from sources like the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s not exhaustive but should still give you a good idea of jobs that don’t require a university education. Of course, factors like experience level and the state you live in also play a significant role in income potential. If one of these career paths below strikes your interest, research the job and look into how to get involved in each career path. Here is a list of some of the highest-paying jobs without a degree:
Most of These Jobs Boil Down to 3 Main CategoriesAs you read through these options, you may notice a few primary categories that most of these jobs fall under:
Regardless of which sounds interesting, you can expect hourly pay to start around $20 per hour and rise to $40 per hour with experience (after you complete any required training). What Is The Highest Paid Job That Doesn’t Require a College Degree? What are the best-paying jobs is a difficult question, as it depends on the job type and skills you bring to the table. However, with experience and hard work, it is possible to make a good living without a college degree. Are There Paying Jobs $100,000+ That Don’t Need a Bachelor’s Degree? It is possible to make over $100K without a college degree or even a high school diploma, but it usually requires years of experience and hard work. Choosing a high-paying job that allows you to grow from entry-level, gain valuable experience, and scale is a great way to reach six figures and beyond. To Each Their Own: But What About Self-employment?There are very few self-employment jobs made the list based on the numbers. This is odd as self-made businesses have huge income potential. Average self-employment income is majorly skewed due to median salary variables. Take being a realtor, for example. Some realtors are crushing it and making a comfortable 6-figure salary, while others make just enough to pay the bills or treat it more like a hobby for a few extra bucks. Ultimately, self-employment has some of the highest income potentials without a degree – but it also comes with the biggest risk of getting no paycheck. There is some inherent risk in doing this, but the payout could be lucrative if you’re willing to put in a little extra work and take a leap of faith. Highest Paying Self-employed or Freelance Jobs Without a DegreeThese jobs require no prior experience or a bachelor’s degree, making them great for teenagers, college students, stay-at-home moms, or anyone wanting to earn extra income.
How To Choose a Career Path Without a DegreeChoosing the right career path without a degree is easier than ever. We live in a time where you can learn almost anything at the click of a button and gain valuable experience working in a specific industry. So, where do you start? Here are some tips to help you find the right career for you: 1. Research the job market: Take some time to research and understand different industries, job roles, and options available. Do a job search to see if the career you want is in high demand and offers an opportunity for projected job growth over the next ten years and beyond. 2. Identify your skills and interests: Rather than just going for the highest-paying job, figure out which skills you have, what you enjoy doing, and how they apply to various career paths. 3. Network: Reach out to people in the industry you are interested in and ask about their experience and advice on what paths you can take. If interested, they could mentor you as well. 4. Try different roles: Apply for internships or volunteer opportunities to get a feel for the job and see if it is something you want to pursue. 5. Consider professional certifications: Look into courses or programs that certify you in a particular area. This can be a great way to gain the skills and experience needed to pursue a certain career path. 6. Don’t be afraid to take risks: Be open to exploring different opportunities and taking chances. You never know what could lead you to the career of your dreams. Find a Job That Fits Your Skill SetSo many unique jobs pay well these days with very few education requirements. There’s no reason to settle for a job that doesn’t fit your skill set. We all have different life goals and skills that make us unique, so having a job that aligns with your aspirations makes sense. And if you try one avenue and find you don’t like it, don’t be afraid to pivot and try again. Happy Job Hunting! This article originally appeared on Wealth of Geeks. Via https://mylifeiguess.com/high-pay-no-degree-jobs/ The labor market landscape has significantly shifted over the past few years. Employers once held significant leverage over the market to the point where job-seekers would find a job and then move to whichever city was required. Now, employees hold more bargaining power, and many first decide on a city they want to live in, move there, and find a job once they are settled. Employees are catered for because it is much cheaper and easier for large corporations to keep on current employees than hire new ones. This paradigm shift has given long-time employees that aren’t used to having a voice the opportunity to test the market and even shift into a new industry altogether! Working in real estate investment trusts (or REITs) has become popular among professionals seeking a different career path as more and more people see the opportunity to learn and eventually invest in the real estate industry. What Are Real Estate Investment Trusts?A real estate investment trust is a type of security that uses public funds raised through offerings listed on major stock exchanges to acquire and manage income-producing real estate assets. For casual investors or individuals that still need more money to purchase physical real estate property, an investment in a REIT provides a great alternative. Simply put, a real estate investment trust is a company that owns a portfolio of real estate assets. When you buy shares of a REIT, you are purchasing a share of their portfolio, similar to buying the stock of any publicly traded company. So while you don’t own the actual real estate, you own a portion of the company that owns and operates the real estate. How Many Jobs Are Available in Real Estate Investment Trusts?REITs hire portfolio managers, investment analysts, property managers, leasing consultants, real estate sales supervisors, property appraisers, development associates, acquisitions managers, investor relations specialists, and more. REITs employ an estimated 307,000 full-time employees in the US who collectively earn approximately $22.7 billion in income each year. The industry is large enough, but how can professionals maximize their income potential here? Employees should not only land the best-paying jobs but also try to learn as much as possible about the real estate industry so as to invest in their own commercial properties and boost their income further! What Are The Best Paying Jobs in Real Estate Investment Trusts? The best-paying jobs in real estate investment trusts are asset manager, development manager, acquisitions manager, and investor relations. While these titles require some experience and know-how, they do not require a degree in real estate. With that said, a degree in finance, specifically real estate finance, is a great way to get your first opportunity with a real estate investment trust. Typically, this will be as an analyst, allowing you to work with asset managers, property managers, and other real estate professionals. As you immerse yourself in real estate investing and learn how it works, you will gain the experience necessary to move up to these top-paying positions. Asset ManagerAsset management is essential for real estate investment trusts. It ensures each property within its portfolio operates smoothly and meets certain investment expectations. As an asset manager for a REIT, you’ll likely assume duties over a portfolio within a particular sector, such as retail shopping centers, office towers, or industrial parks. Senior Asset Managers in the US can expect to earn between $127,000 and $265,000 annually, according to Comparably. As part of the job, you’ll need to be able to review financial reports and budgets, oversee property managers, hire and assist leasing consultants, and make certain strategic decisions related to the health of each property. Development ManagerWhile asset management jobs consist of maintaining an existing asset, a development manager is in charge of construction when building new facilities. For instance, a REIT might hire you to manage the construction of 10 Starbucks projects across their portfolio. A development manager can expect to earn somewhere in the range between $115,000 and $200,000 per year, according to Investing Fuse. Typically, a trust will expect you to have some development experience to be considered for this position, as there are many moving parts in development. You can expect to manage projects from start to finish, which means coordinating with engineers, architects, attornies, tenants, contractors, leasing consultants, and local authorities. To excel as a development manager, you will need to be very organized and keep everyone on task to meet numerous deadlines. Acquisitions ManagerREITs are constantly looking to raise investment capital to purchase new property. They may also decide to sell a property or portfolio and exchange it for a new one. An acquisitions manager will help the REIT source new deals that provide a good return for their investors. An acquisitions manager usually has a background as a REIT analyst who is used to looking at thousands of investment opportunities. Most REIT analysts possess a bachelor’s degree and gain experience looking for commercial real estate properties that generate income. Acquisitions managers typically cash in on a salary between $93,000 and $163,000, according to Glassdoor. Additional bonuses depend on the number of transactions you can source. Investor RelationsFinally, a career as an investor relations specialist rounds out our list of best-paying jobs in the REIT industry. Each trust has strict regulatory rules and guidelines that require plenty of care and planning. Investor relations allows you to work directly with investors to keep them updated on current assets and financial performance and provide feedback on where the company is headed. People like to keep a close eye on their investments, and it will be your job to ensure they are happy with the company’s business dealings. A job in investor relations pays within a range of $184,762 and $247,915, according to Salary.com. Aside from interacting with investors and answering their specific questions, you will be responsible for compiling many financial reports and status updates detailing certain business activities and investment strategies. What REIT Jobs Are Available? If you browse the various search engines, you’ll find plenty of jobs available working at a real estate investment trust. Opportunities such as analyst, property manager, leasing consultant, real estate attorney, and more will come up for you to research. With that said, we recommend going through the list of REITs included in this article and calling each of them individually to ask about job opportunities within their organization. It is the best way to get in front of the right people who will eventually decide whether to hire you. So while job postings are accessible on the internet and are a great way to get some initial applications in, take the time to make contact with each company to make an effort to schedule some face-to-face time. How Many Real Estate Investment Trusts Are There?According to Stock Market MBA, 170 real estate investment trusts currently operate in the US, with a market cap of more than $1.3 trillion. Check out the complete list as you start job hunting, and pay attention to the types of trusts. Consider the status of the real estate market and each sector before contacting trusts about potential job opportunities. For instance, avoid an office REIT following the pandemic, as most look for ways to save money and offset losses due to higher vacancy rates. On the flip side, you may have some experience in the industrial sector and should reach out to Prologis, Public Storage, and First Industrial Realty Trust. What Are The Best Real Estate Investment Trusts? As a commercial real estate agent with over ten years of experience in the business, I’m going to give you my favorite REITs to consider when looking for jobs. My list is solely based on my opinion in dealing with them directly. Of course, I have yet to deal directly with all 170 REITs, so I’ll only include those I have encountered. With that said, here are the top REITs I recommend reaching out to based on my personal experience in dealing with them: PrologisAs the largest REIT based on market cap, Prologis always operates efficiently and honestly. Their people seem happy to be doing what they do and are trained appropriately to get the job done. Simon Property GroupI haven’t dealt with Simon much, but in the few instances I’ve interacted with them, I get the sense they treat their employees well. Simon has struggled over the years with some failing mall properties, but I would be willing to bet their people are why they pulled through. AvalonBay CommunitiesAvalonBay owns excellent properties and instills a sense of community in their apartments and workforce. I have not had a bad experience with AvalonBay. Also, they are growing quickly. Kimco Realty CorporationFrom what I can gather, Kimco operates a well-oiled machine that thrives as a commercial property owner through its people. They have a welcoming corporate culture that suits industry newcomers. Rounding out my list of respected REITs are the following:
How to Position Yourself To Become a Real Estate Investment Trust ProfessionalHow do you put yourself in a position to get hired as a commercial real estate professional working at a REIT? Well, you’ll need to tighten up your resume. It helps to have a real estate finance background or other industry experience, but it’s not necessary. Talk with as many other real estate professionals as possible before applying to a REIT. We know there are only 170 real estate investment trusts in the United States, so, likely, you’ll only get one shot to impress each one. From there, call down the REIT list and keep a spreadsheet of each hiring manager you connect with. Get their phone and email, and continue following up. They may not be hiring right away, but you must stay on top of these people if you want to get one of the best-paying jobs available. The first touch can be your resume, then a month or so later, shoot them another email with some comments about a press release they issued. Gaining market knowledge and learning the terminology will help you when you eventually work your way into an interview room at one of these larger REITs. They will be able to sense whether or not you have any idea about what you’re talking about. Continue to build relationships in the industry, and sooner or later, one of these leads will open the door to a great job that will have you up and away. Final ThoughtsSo get out there and start meeting with people to understand how the commercial real estate business works and what companies are looking for as they interview their next round of potential employees. If you’re serious about working at a real estate investment trust, stick with it and continue to make contact with people in the company. I’ve found that most commercial real estate companies hire based on likeability and work ethic instead of credentials and test scores. Indeed, those can help, but are you willing to put in the effort to build a real relationship? If you are, you’re ready for success as the next employee of a thriving REIT! This article originally appeared on Wealth of Geeks. Via https://mylifeiguess.com/career-in-real-estate-investment/ To say that a career is a marathon, not a sprint, is an incredible understatement. A career is a journey that will likely last half of your life, a marathon of marathons, with more than a few sprints mixed into it. It is a quest replete with highs, lows, and more in between; navigating them all on your own is overwhelming, but that’s where a career coach can help. As with other areas where a large-scale challenge intersects with a burning motivation to succeed, your career is where professional mentorship, encouragement, and advice can go a long way. Like a personal trainer, financial advisor, therapist, or dietician, the right career coach can make a world of difference when you need one. What Does a Career Coach Do?“Career coach” is a broad-spectrum term describing any one of several distinct professions, including career counselor, life coach, executive coach, or simply career coach. Each has a different specialty or focus, but all help people work through various professional struggles and barriers. We all face various career challenges ranging from interpersonal dynamics to decision-making, reaching goals, knowledge and skill gaps, confidence issues, and more. It may not always feel this way, but everyone struggles at different points. We can attempt to overcome each of these obstacles alone through determination and sheer force of will, and we may succeed. However, engaging the support of someone well-versed in these challenges can help move things along faster and provide solutions we may not have found alone. 8 Things a Career Coach Can Help You AchieveAs it is a diverse profession, career counseling can help with various goals and difficulties. The reason you pursue coaching may not be the same as someone else’s. Whether you choose to work in finance, healthcare, hospitality, or another profession, every career is unique, and so are the challenges accompanying it. Even so, several themes radiate through most work-related adversity, and chances are, there’s a coach ready to help you conquer yours. 1. Finding DirectionOne of the most fundamental reasons to employ a career coach is to help you figure out what shape you want your career to take. This conundrum is especially common for younger individuals who will soon or have recently finished school. However, reinventing oneself and forging a new path midway through your career is increasingly common. Whether you’re taking your first baby steps into your career or you’re more established, it’s normal to be unsure of what comes next. Finding a counselor to talk things through with you is an excellent way to assess your skills, values, and dreams and start creating a map to the treasure ahead. In addition, they may employ tools like a career assessment or personality test such as Myers-Briggs to help identify your top career options. 2. Landing The JobIf you know what type of work you want to do but are struggling to break into the world of work in that industry, a career coach can help. Specifically, you should consider a career center or counselor specializing in job search strategies, employability, and interview skills. Coaches like these can help you fine-tune your resume and cover letter, find the best career fairs, and potentially practice interviewing. They may also help boost your LinkedIn profile or find competitive internship opportunities to open doors and build relationships. 3. Building ConfidenceLow confidence can sap your vigor and weigh down your career development. Often, you have the skills and knowledge you need to achieve your most significant career goals, and all you lack is belief in yourself. Many issues, including age, gender dynamics, experience level, and educational background, can make it easy to feel like everyone around you is smarter, faster, and better at their jobs than you. So it’s no wonder nearly two-thirds of global employees experience impostor syndrome. Having someone in your corner to help you learn to see your value and talents can be instrumental when it comes to confidence issues. The right career coach can do just that. Many coaches offer motivation, counseling, and discussions to help you see (and believe in) the value you provide in your work. 4. Strategic Goal-settingEffective career planning often comes down to setting strategic goals and having a clear path to achieve them. Professional career counseling is a fantastic way to turn your biggest career goals into actionable steps. Advising sessions focused on strategy may involve:
Excelling in your occupation and moving your way up the ladder involves many moving parts. Working with a professional can help you better understand those different parts and how to make them work for you. 5. Improving Interpersonal Skills or DynamicsAs much as we may want to believe that career growth is strictly meritocratic, there is much more to your professional advancement than how hard you work and how productive you are. In many cases, the career guidance we need most is not in improving our core job function, but our interpersonal skills, including:
Regardless of your career path, you will need to work well with others for your best chances of success. If this is an area you struggle with or would like to keep growing in, consider a career coach or a therapist to help you develop the tools you need to thrive. 6. Making Difficult ChoicesEvery career will present difficult choices from time to time. For instance, you may face a dilemma about whether to take a particular promotion or job change. In most cases, no one can make these choices for you. You are the one who knows all the particulars of the issue, and only you can sense the answer that feels most right to you. However, career counseling is a great way to weigh all your options and discuss the considerations before making your choice. Career advisors are typically quite comfortable with this type of conversation and can be an invaluable resource in helping you confidently arrive at a decision. 7. Navigating TransitionsThe age of applying to one job as a young adult and then staying in it for decades is, for most of us, a thing of the past. Instead, ongoing career changes are now the ubiquitous reality — promotions, layoffs, industry shifts, going fully remote, or returning to the office, to name a few. Transitioning into or out of a role, company, or career has many layers. A job is intertwined with our finances, emotions, and how we spend our time; changing it can impact all of these. One reason to seek career counseling is for emotional, logistical, or strategic support with starting a new job, leaving an old one, or any other significant career transition. Whatever type of support you need as you move into this next leg of your journey, career services professionals can offer it. 8. Rediscovering Your MotivationA typical career lasts the majority of a person’s adult life. In that time, each of us will undoubtedly go through numerous personal changes. Situations evolve, priorities and perspectives change, and new fears and dreams supplant old ones. It is entirely ordinary to experience changes in emotions toward your work during all that time. For example, the things you cared most about when you started working may not be the same anymore. Or you may have once loved the work itself and since fallen out of love with it. Having motivation and fulfillment in your work is crucial not only to career advancement but to your overall satisfaction until transitioning into retirement life. If you have lost touch with your “why,” consider career coaching as a way to get back in touch with your reasons for pushing forward and creating beautiful things. When Should You Hire a Career Coach?Even after knowing the many types of career coaches and what they can do to help, it’s not always clear when it’s time to find one. It feels easiest to consider seeking career advice in moments of acute struggle, such as when you feel stuck or overwhelmed by a specific issue. A question you don’t know how to answer, a problem you haven’t been able to solve, or a goal you want to achieve are all valid reasons to work with a career advisor. Alternatively, a career coach can also be a fantastic resource for helping you with ongoing career management and growth or navigating chronic challenges. In such cases, a coach can work like a therapist or mentor, offering continuing support with your career exploration through regular sessions. The short answer is there’s no right or wrong time to try it. If there’s something in your professional life you’d like to improve, consider reaching out to someone. Many coaches will offer an introductory consultation for free, and you can decide where to go next. Evolving Your Career (With a Bit of Help)A career is the marathon of marathons, yet dotted all along the way with sprints. There are times when that race is easy, or at least manageable, and forward progress feels natural. There are many times along that epic journey when you don’t know where to go, there are roadblocks in your way, or it feels like your legs could give out at any moment. When these struggles inevitably arise, there are people who are ready to help. Career coaches may not be your first line of support for every professional challenge you face, but they are a fantastic resource. The right career coach at the right time can change your life if only you are willing to seek them out. This article originally appeared on Wealth of Geeks. With our current reality, taking advantage of free skills training is something everyone can benefit from. What Job Skills Should I Learn?Well, what are you interested in learning? What do you struggle with at work? What skills do the top people in your industry have? Your answers to these questions give you a good place to start. If you’re stuck, focus on learning soft skills or transferable skills. These are skills that are, as the name suggests, transferable to many different career fields and roles. They make you a stronger, more well-rounded employee. These include:
You can learn both hard skills (technical skills) and soft skills for free. What About Accreditation & Official Recognition?“Accreditation is a form of quality control, ensuring that institutions of higher education satisfy certain standards.” – Cappex While most free courses and training programs aren’t accredited, you don’t necessarily need them to be. There are, however, certain job skills that are regulated and require official licenses or certificates. These are more common in the trades, health care, and teaching sectors and are rarely free. You may have to return to school and take a full program to learn these job skills. For most of us, taking a course or two is all you need to learn a new program or skill. If you already have a certificate, degree, or diploma, any professional development you do will further enhance your background and make you a stronger employee. There are also a lot of jobs where practical experience is more valuable or equal to education. So where you learned these skills doesn’t really matter, as long as you can do the job. A few online platforms allow you to audit a class for free and then pay if you want the certification. If you decide to take advantage of these offers, please be sure to CANCEL your membership before the free trial ends unless you choose to continue. Prices mentioned are in USD and are accurate as of the date of publishing (but are subject to change). This post contains affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for more details. These courses are offered full-time, part-time, in-person, and online, which makes it easier to learn on your own schedule. Your Coworkers & Professional NetworkYour coworkers will have a strong understanding of what skills are needed to do the job and succeed within the company and the industry. Who better to ask for help than them? You should also talk to your manager or HR department, too. They should have training programs or materials available for you. Larger companies may even offer mentorship opportunities. Others in your network are also great resources to learn something new. They can provide an alternate perspective on things, let you know more about what systems or programs they use, and can help you stay informed about industry trends. Networking groups and associations often host events like conferences and seminars where you can learn from experts, ask questions, and further develop your skills. Your Family & FriendsThink about all of the things you can learn from people within your own family and social circle. Your parents, grandparents, children, siblings, niblings, friends, and other relatives all have unique and different skills. So why not ask them to teach you something you always wanted to learn? VolunteeringVolunteering is an excellent way to learn by doing. Some volunteer opportunities offer extensive free training (like those in crisis support, addictions counseling, etc.), while others allow you to practice those important transferable skills.
